You have to love politicians. Jumping on the renewable energy bandwagon, they are suddenly coming up with all kinds of programs to solve energy problems.

In Australia, the Labor Party is throwing around a startling idea as part of its effort to win upcoming elections. In an effort to cut greenhouse emissions and create jobs the renewable energy industry, the Labor Party wants to convert all public schools to solar power.

To understand the motivation for making the proposal, one has to have a grip on what has been happening in Australia. Cutting to the chase, there have been allegations that utility giants are strong arming government agencies to prevent the implementation of green energy programs. Specifically, there have been

claims that government agencies are so in bed with large energy companies that scientists are being pressured and even gagged on renewable energy subjects.

On the front page of the World Nuclear Association website prominently rests a quote from what some consider the world s leading environmentalist and among the world s top scientists, Dr. James Lovelock:

There is no sensible alternative to nuclear power if we are to sustain civilization. - James Lovelock, preeminent world leader in the development of environmental consciousness

At age eighty-six, Dr. Lovelock has just published his fourth book, The Revenge of Gaia (Penguin Books, 2006). A cold greenhouse is not warmed by a heating device. The environment is warmer than the outside - this is due to the heat of the sun’s rays being trapped inside the covering material - be it glass or plastic - during the warm season, and heat accumulated in the soil being released back into the greenhouse during the fall.

In summer, cool air enters the greenhouse through side ventilators near the base of the wall, keeping a steady stream of fresh air flowing around the plants.
